Boards
Newton has two operating legal entity boards, Newton Investment Management Limited (NIM) and Newton Investment Management North America LLC (NIMNA).
Our boards are typically responsible for the legal entity’s strategy, long-term objectives and financial performance and ensuring the maintenance of a sound system of internal controls and risk management.
The boards are supported by the Newton Executive Management Committee (NEMC). The purpose of NEMC is to ensure the effective operational and strategic management of Newton.
Newton Investment Management Limited Board
Judy Marlinski
Independent non-executive director (Chair)

Experience: Judy has 35 years of relevant industry experience. During her extensive career in financial services, including 25 years working across international markets, she has held positions as CEO, President and COO within the investment management and wealth management industries, including a tenure as President and CEO of Fidelity Investments Japan from 2011 to 2016.
During her Fidelity Investments tenure, she was a director for several regulatory boards, governing operating and investment advisory businesses. She was also named one of the ‘25 Most Influential Women in Asset Management’ by Asian Investor Magazine, 2014.
Qualifications: Judy graduated from Cornell University with a BSc in Business Management and Marketing and also completed a Master of Business Administration, with honours, from Boston University. She recently attended ‘Women on Boards: Succeeding as a Corporate Director’ at Harvard Business School.

Kevin Carter
Independent non-executive director

Experience: Kevin has 41 years of relevant industry experience. He held a number of senior roles during his 32-year executive career, including being CEO at Old Mutual Asset Managers in the UK and the US, Main Partner and Head of the European Investment Practice at Watson Wyatt LLP, and Managing Director and Head of EMEA Pension Advisory Group at JP Morgan Securities Limited.
Qualifications: Having graduated from the University of Natal with a BSc Hons (cum laude) in Chemistry, Kevin completed an MBA at the Wits Graduate School of Business, Johannesburg, and a PhD in Finance at the University of Cape Town. He is also a Chartered Financial Analyst.

Sharon French

Experience: Sharon has 35 years of relevant industry experience. During her extensive career in financial services, she has held a variety of senior roles, including being Managing Director and Head of Private Client & Institutions at Blackrock for its iShares ETF business, President of F-Squared Capital, Senior Strategic Advisor to the President of BNY Mellon Investment Management and Executive Vice President of Beta Solutions & Sustainable Investing at Oppenheimer Funds. Sharon’s most recent position was the President and CEO of Life & Retirement Funds for AIG.
In 2019, Sharon was named one of the ‘Most Notable Women in Finance’ by Crain’s New York.
Qualifications: Sharon received a B.S. in Business Management from the University of Delaware and earned her Certified Management Analyst designation from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business.

Hanneke Smits
Non-executive director
Chief Executive Officer, BNY Mellon Investment Management

Hanneke is responsible for the strategic direction and the resulting company performance for BNY Mellon Investment Management. In her role, Hanneke provides day to day oversight of the Investment Management firms, coordinating the efforts of senior executives and collaborating with them to execute their strategic objectives and actions.
Experience: With 30 years of investment experience, Hanneke was previously CEO of Newton Investment Management from 2016 to 2020. Hanneke started her career as an investment manager at Pantheon Ventures and worked for Philips China Hong Kong Group. She then joined private equity firm Adams Street Partners in 1997 to build out its global investment capabilities, and successfully launched its presence in Europe and Asia. She served on its Executive Committee from 2001 to 2014, having been Chief Investment Officer from 2008 to 2014.
Qualifications: Hanneke has a BBA from Nijenrode University, Netherlands and an MBA from the London Business School.

She is Trustee of the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF), founded in 2011 by The Sutton Trust in partnership with Impetus. Hanneke was also a Non-Executive Director to the Court of the Bank of England, and a co-founder and first Chair of Level 20, a not-for-profit organisation set up in 2015 to inspire women to join and succeed in the private equity industry.
Interests: Away from work, alongside enjoying time with her family, Hanneke loves to travel, is an avid reader, as well as a keen tennis player and skier, and is still trying to improve her golf.

Euan Munro
Executive director
Chief Executive Officer

As CEO, Euan manages and leads Newton’s business by establishing and developing appropriate business goals – both short-term targets and strategic objectives to ensure that clients are well-served, that the firm succeeds commercially, and that it attracts and retains talented people. Euan is Chair of the Executive Management Committee and the NIM NIMNA Investment Oversight Committee.
Experience: Euan is a seasoned investment management executive with a background in macro investing. He started his career as an Actuarial Trainee at Scottish Provident, then joined Standard Life Investments (SLI) as an Inflation-Linked Portfolio Manager in 1995. Euan spent nearly 20 years at SLI where he was Head of Multi-Asset and Fixed-Interest Investing and was latterly a member of that company’s board.
Euan joined Newton from Aviva Investors where he was Chief Executive Officer and a member of the Aviva plc group executive team for seven years.
Qualifications: Euan has a first-class honours degree in Physics from the University of Edinburgh and is a Fellow of the Faculty and Institute of Actuaries. He is also a graduate of the Advanced Management Program at Wharton Business School, Philadelphia.

Andrew Downs

Chief Operating Officer

Andrew oversees investment operations, technology and projects, data governance and investment management support and control. In his role, Andrew is Chair of the NIM NIMNA Operating Committee.
Experience: Andrew is a Chartered Accountant having begun his career in Accounts and Taxation at Bowker Orford & Co; he then worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers as a Senior Manager for six years in both the Audit and Litigation Support teams. Andrew joined Newton in 1994 and has been the Newton COO since October 2004.
Qualifications: Andrew is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ACA).

Michael Germano
Manager of the Board
Head of North America

Michael oversees Newton’s business in North America, working effectively with the executive management team to ensure North American priorities are represented and strategies support the profitable and sustainable growth of the business. Michael is also responsible for building the Newton brand within North America by managing and developing a cohesive global team and retaining top-tier talent.
Experience: Michael joined BNY Mellon’s Corporate Development team in 2007, where he was responsible for mergers and acquisitions. In 2013, he relocated to Hong Kong to become the Investment Management Chief Financial Officer for the APAC region. In 2016, Michael moved to London to head the International Strategy Group for Investment Management.
Prior to joining Newton following the integration of Mellon Investments Corporation’s equity and multi-asset capabilities into the Newton Investment Management Group, Michael was Chief Executive Officer of Active Management, Chief Operating Officer and Head of Strategy at Mellon Investments Corporation (a BNY Mellon group company).
Qualifications: Michael has a BS in Management Science from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and an MBA from the Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon University.

Tina King
Manager of the Board
Chief Financial Officer for Investment and Wealth Management at BNY Mellon

Tina serves as a finance business partner for the Investment and Wealth Management business, driving financial planning, analysis goals and strategic objectives across global investment and distribution CEOs and teams. Tina provides business analytics and advice to support target-setting, performance management and improved growth and profitability. She leads and manages teams across accounting, control, treasury, financial and management reporting, budgeting, forecasting, financial planning and analysis and business development.
Experience: Tina joined Newton and BNY Mellon from Goldman Sachs where she held a number of leadership roles across investment and wealth management over a period of 15 years. Tina served positions including Chief Operating Officer for Americas Client Business, Chief Administrative Officer for Global Third-Party Distribution, Chief Operating Officer for Global Insurance Asset Management and Vice President of Finance and Strategy.
Qualifications: Tina earned her MBA from the Kellogg School of Management and BS in Environmental Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

External appointments: Tina sits on the Board of Trustees at The New York Foundling which helps children, youth, adults and families in need create transformational change in their own lives through services, support and advocacy.

Chief Risk Officer

James seeks to ensure that risks to the Newton business and its employees are identified and mitigated effectively. In his role, James is the Chair of the NIM Risk and Compliance Committee.
Experience: James acquired a range of experience in high-profile roles at BNY Mellon Asset Management International and at the Financial Services Authority (the principal financial services regulatory body in the UK at that time).
He initially served as Newton’s Chief Compliance Officer, assuming the Chief Risk Officer role in 2015.
Qualifications: James holds a diploma from the Securities Institute and a BA in Industrial Economics from Nottingham University.

Julian Lyne
Chief Commercial Officer

Julian has responsibility for all aspects of global distribution, client relationship management and marketing. He joined Newton to lead the global consultant relations and UK institutional business development team. In his role, Julian chairs both the NIM NIMNA Commercial Oversight Committee and the NIM NIMNA Product and Commercial Committee.
Experience: Julian has held various roles throughout his career covering client and consultant relations across both DC and DB arrangements. He began his career at Fidelity Investments as a Client Advisor to then become a Client Director at JP Morgan.
Julian then served as Head of Institutional Business at HSBC Asset Management for five years and at F&C Asset Management for six years.
Qualifications: Julian has a BSc (Hons) in Psychology from City University, London.
Interests: Outside of work, Julian ‘enjoys’ watching Arsenal, the Jets and Mets and is a keen member of the Peloton family. He is passionate about music of all sorts.

John Porter III
Chief Investment Officer, Head of Equity

John is responsible for overseeing all equity strategies. He is also lead portfolio manager for the US Small, Mid and Large Cap Growth Equity strategies.
Experience: John started his career at Fidelity Investments where he spent 15 years in various portfolio manager and research roles. He then was Founder and Chief Investment Officer of JP3 Capital Management for over 3 years. In 2013, John served as President and Chair of the Investment Committee at Seaward Management.
Prior to joining Newton following the integration of Mellon Investments Corporation’s equity and multi-asset capabilities into the Newton Investment Management Group, John was Chief Investment Officer at Mellon Investments Corporation. Therese Niklasson
Global Head of Sustainable Investment

Therese is responsible for the strategic vision and delivery of sustainability across the wider investment platform at Newton. This includes working with the investment teams to ensure that ESG matters are fully integrated into the fundamental investment philosophy, as well as continuous innovation around sustainability solutions. Therese is responsible for the wider responsible investment team which supports the investment platform through work across areas including ESG research, stewardship, and ESG data and technology. In her role, Therese is the Chair of the NIM NIMNA Sustainability Committee.
Experience: Therese started her career as an ESG Analyst and then joined Threadneedle Asset Management as Head of Governance and Responsible Investment in 2007.
In 2011, Therese joined Ninety One (formerly Investec Asset Management) where she spent over a decade developing its sustainability investment platform.
Qualifications: Therese holds degrees from London School of Economics and Oxford University in the field of Environmental Management and Policy.
Interests: As a native Swede, Therese enjoys the outdoors and spends as much free time as possible along the Scandinavian coastlines.

Mitesh Sheth MBE
Chief Investment Officer of Multi-Asset

Mitesh has oversight of Newton’s multi-asset and fixed-income teams based in London, as well as Newton’s quantitative multi-asset solutions team in San Francisco.
Experience: Mitesh started his career as a Fund Manager Researcher at AON and WTW. Mitesh then joined Henderson Global Investors in 2005, where he was Head of Fixed Income and later Director of Business Innovation.
Mitesh joined Redington in 2013 as Director of Strategy, and then served as CEO for nearly six years.
Qualifications: Mitesh qualified from LSE in 1999 with a BSc in Actuarial Science. After graduating, Mitesh spent a year in India studying at Tatvagnan Vidhyapeeth (School of Philosophy). He is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries (FIA), having qualified in 2003.
External appointments: Mitesh is a member of the Diversity Project’s advisory board; he is an active member of the CEO sponsor group for its gender workstream, an LGBT Great #50for50 ally, and an executive sponsor of its race and ethnicity workstream.
Interests: Other than spending time with his wife and three teenagers, Mitesh enjoys reading, yoga, and going to the theatre.
