Newton Charity Seminar | Wednesday 8 June 2022

Many of today’s economic and investment challenges carry echoes of an earlier era. We will help you understand some of the investment implications for charities of this fast-changing world.

This year’s seminar is titled Back to the Future: investing for charities in a fast-changing world, and will take place on Wednesday 8 June at Haberdashers’ Hall.

At the event, we will discuss topical areas for charities such as inflation, net zero, geopolitics and income. We will start with today’s current challenges and opportunities as well as discussing issues on the horizon that we believe charity investors should be addressing. We will also discuss how our approach can help you reach your own net-zero targets, and we will explain how our approach takes an idea to investment in your portfolio.

Our CEO, Euan Munro, and the charities team look forward to welcoming you to the event.

Session 1

Today’s challenges and opportunities – navigating current uncertainties

Emerging inflation pressures and the prospects of a more hawkish monetary policy environment pointed to investment challenges…and then Russia invaded Ukraine. We look at how charity portfolios have fared and how we are navigating these extraordinary times.

Alison El-Araby, Portfolio manager, multi-asset team
Bhavin Shah, Portfolio manager, multi-asset team
Rorie Evans, Client director
Hilary Meades, Portfolio manager, multi-asset team

Session 2

The path to net zero

Newton has joined the Net Zero Asset Managers initiative. We look at what this means in practice for the management of our clients’ assets and the work that we will be doing with investee companies.

Lloyd McAllister, Head of ESG research
Antoine Najm, Stewardship analyst

Session 3

Geopolitics and implications for portfolio construction

We have all become accustomed to a prolonged trend towards an ever more globalised world, characterised by cost-efficient, just-in-time global supply chains. The pandemic and geopolitics are accelerating a trend towards a deglobalised world, as well as a move towards just-in-case supply chain thinking, and the polarisation of democratic and autocratic government models is being thrown into sharper relief. We look at what this may mean for our future investment thinking.

Mitesh Sheth, Chief investment officer, multi-asset
Simon Nichols, Portfolio manager, equity opportunities team
Vivek Gautam, Global research analyst, financials
Richard Bullock, Senior research analyst, geopolitics

Session 4

Into your portfolio – the journey from idea to investment (and beyond)

Regardless of political and economic challenges, good companies will continue to do good things and make profits for shareholders. We look at one stock’s journey from idea to portfolio implementation, showing how it becomes, and remains, part of a portfolio.

Rob Stewart, Investment leader, multi-asset team
Connor Middleton, Global research analyst, financials
Alison El-Araby, Portfolio manager, multi-asset team
