Newton Appoints Hanneke Smits to its Board of Directors and as future leadership replacement

Newton Investment Management (“Newton”), an investment boutique of BNY Mellon Investment Management, has announced that Helena Morrissey, CBE, will move into a new role as non-executive chair of the Board of Directors after 15 years as CEO of Newton. Hanneke Smits has been identified to succeed Helena Morrissey as CEO. Newton has appointed Hanneke Smits to its Board of Directors and as Chief Executive Officer designate.

Hanneke Smits’ career spans more than two decades in financial services, most recently serving as Chief Investment Officer of Adams Street Partners and a member of the firm’s Executive Committee. Based in London, Smits will be actively involved in managing Newton’s business and focus on expanding its presence in key growth markets.

As non-executive chair, Helena Morrissey will continue to serve as an adviser to Newton and will represent Newton and BNY Mellon Investment Management within the financial services sector.

“We are thrilled to welcome Hanneke to Newton’s Board of Directors and as Chief Executive Officer designate,” said Mitchell Harris, CEO of BNY Mellon Investment Management. “She has deep investment knowledge, an impressive track record of developing senior leaders and investment professionals, and proven expertise growing a global firm across developed and emerging markets. As Newton continues to expand its international footprint, I am confident in Hanneke’s ability to lead the firm into its next phase of growth.”

“Newton’s talented portfolio management team is world class, and I see enormous potential in the business,” said Hanneke Smits. “I am honoured to join the firm and look forward to building on its many accomplishments by further strengthening our investment capabilities and delivering results for our clients.”

“We are extremely thankful to Helena for her many contributions during her tenure as CEO, and I am pleased that she will continue to serve Newton as non-executive chair,” Harris added. “Under Helena’s leadership, Newton has developed into a globally recognised asset manager and valuable BNY Mellon investment boutique, with strong investment performance across real return, fixed income, multi-asset, global and equity income strategies, along with a market-leading responsible investment proposition, all driven by the firm’s team-based investment approach.”

“After 15 years as Newton’s CEO, I am enormously proud of the service we have provided to our clients, and to have led such a talented team,” said Helena Morrissey. “The time is now right for me to move on to the next phase of my career and for a new CEO at Newton to drive its ongoing growth. I am looking forward to assisting Hanneke over the coming months while also continuing my roles with the Investment Association and the Financial Services Trade and Investment Board, among others.”

Hanneke Smits joined Adams Street Partners in 1997 and was responsible for successfully launching the firm’s presence in Europe and Asia and building out its global investment capabilities. She also serves as a non-executive Director of Sofina SA, a Euronext-listed investment company and is the Co-Founder and Chair of Level 20, a non-profit organisation dedicated to inspiring women to join and succeed in the European private equity industry.
